For the second time in one year, I’ve got a new album by The Pup Pups, and you know that means i had to get a review from my Mom for A Boy and His Dog and Three Cats and A Bear! I’ve been so busy lately between finishing my next David Rosen album(s) and this The Pup Pups album and film scoring and podcast stuff that I haven’t even gotten a chance to make a post on this site letting you all know that the album is out yet, but it came out on December 6th (the day before Harvey’s 17th birthday)! Above are my Mom’s handwritten notes and below I’ve transcribed them as best I can with my own little commentary.
- “Older & Older” – WASNT SURE IF THIS WAS ABOUT HARVEY—AND ME!!!
- It’s about Harvey and ME, not you.
- “Your Little Monster” – PROPS TO SPOILT PUP 🙂
- He sure is. The most spoilt pup.
- “Don’t Know Whatcha Talkin’ Bout” – DYLAN-ISH w/ BACKGROUND CHICKS
- Sure.
- “Dr. Frankenstein” – WEAK NIN – NEEDS MORE DRUMS!!! (THINK TRENT + BOWIE)
- the NEXT one is the NIN one!
- “Don’t Tell Me” – ? GREEN DAY ROCKER
- I guess KINDA but really it was a big NIN influence on this one.
- “So Predictable” -ROBERT PALMER – WHO U DONT KNOW HA HA
- OK this one you got.
- “Sour Patch Kid” – ? HAND JIVE (GREASE)
- Sure, I guess so…
- “Litter & Glitter” – ROY ORBIGSON + TRAVELING WILBURYS
- Couldn’t be wronger if you tried but thanks for playing Mom! Maybe she missed the 80s?
- “Hellraiser” – ? CHRIS STAPLETON’S TENNESSE WHISKEY
- I had no idea Mom would know who Christ Stapleton is. It’s definitely country, but I’m not even sure what he sounds like so maybe?
- “Bite!” – ROCKS!! ESP AFTER #9
- Leave it to Mom to like the Nu-Metal song.
- “Good Lookin’ Dog” – WILLIE NELSON – ALMSO TNEEDS MORE GRAVELLY VOICE
- I tried a bunch of different voices on this one. And I actaully DO get gravelly on the bonus track version!
- “Long Long Time” – ?? SONNY + CHER ??
- Sure, that works.
- “World’s Best Boy” – SPRINGSTEEN <3
- Americana in general but yeah I can go with that.
- “Why U Be Barkin’ At Yo Daddy?” – BON JOVI, KISS
- I kinda think it’s heavier than either of those but at least she clearly thinks it rocks.
- “Let You Out” – STRAIGHT UP DYLAN W/A GUEST APPERANCE BY DEE SNIDER
- I’ll take it. Both parts of that.
- “Good Lookin’ Friends (Bonus Track)” – NOT GOING THERE!
- I don’t blame you.
Thanks as always for reviewing the album Mom. As always we’d also love to hear YOUR thoughts on the album. So if you’ve listened to the new album, please do get in touch on social media or comment below with your favorite songs.
Like I said I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time to make a blog post about this album or even a discography entry for it. I’ll get that stuff up eventually. There’s also music videos out for “Older & Older” and “Dr. Frankenstein” which you can check out on YouTube. The vinyl edition of the album is finally done (order a copy from Bandcamp at https://thepuppups.bandcamp.com/album/a-boy-and-his-dog-and-three-cats-and-a-bear) and on its way to me now so I’ll do one more promotional push when I start shipping them out around the 1st of the year and then it’s on to the NEXT The Pup Pups album (which I happen to have 5 songs already started for). So see you soon (and also, if you talk to me, remind me to get this website back into shape and to announce my new David Rosen album too while I’m at it, which I was supposed to do yesterday…)
